Start with the correct season
For an IMO in year Y, the general birth-date condition is birth on or after 1 July of year Y−20. For 2027, that means on or after 1 July 2007. Education conditions concern full-time primary or secondary education on or after 1 December of the preceding year, with a specified equivalent for home education.
Nationality and qualifying residence also matter. The rules restrict participation in multiple countries’ final selection examinations in the same IMO year. Read the actual regulations for the full conditions and any annual amendments.

National rules can be stricter
A first-round contest may have its own class, age, residence, citizenship and university-enrolment conditions. Meeting the international age condition does not automatically qualify a student to enter every national selection programme.
Open competition is not the same as national representation
Some competitions accept overseas or foreign students while limiting who can enter later national-team selection. Check both questions before registering.
What to check before applying
- The precise year and programme named in the application notice.
- The allowed date-of-birth range and school years.
- Citizenship, residence and overseas-school rules.
- Conditions concerning school completion or university enrolment.
- Any special rules for home education or previous award recipients.
- Whether another country’s selection process affects eligibility.

Home education, school leaving and studying abroad
The international regulations define the education and nationality/residence conditions; the national organiser applies its own selection-entry rules. Do not replace these conditions with a simple “under 20” test.
