Western Province 1 won both divisions of the 2026 ASSA South African Mathematics Team Competition, the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) announced on 12 October. This is a results report for the competition held on 19 September, not a new registration notice.

Junior and senior results

SAMF’s official announcement gives these podiums:

  • Junior: 1. Western Province 1; 2. Western Province 2; 3. AMESA Durban 1.
  • Senior: 1. Western Province 1; 2. AMESA Durban 1; 3. Boland 1.

The event involved 1,226 learners in 137 teams from 33 regions, at approved centres nationwide. The junior division covers Grades 8–9; the senior division covers Grades 10–12.

How the team event works

Teams comprise ten learners. Each participant first attempts an individual paper; the team then collaborates on a second paper and submits one shared set of answers. Regional organisers select teams under SAMF’s criteria. The event is distinct from the individual SAMO competition.

Use SAMF’s team-results page for the organiser’s results records. No new entry deadline is announced here.

Practise explaining a solution to someone else

For a useful group session, let everyone try one problem independently before discussing it. Ask each person to explain a different step. If two answers disagree, find the first step where the methods separate and check the reason for that step together.

Our South Africa guide links free preparation resources and explains the wider national pathway. Choose a lesson for the skill your group found difficult, then return to the problem and try explaining it again. This is optional preparation advice, not an official team-selection rule.
