The UK Mathematics Trust will trial a different format for the last three questions of the 2026 Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC). Its current competition page lists 22 multiple-choice questions followed by three questions requiring an answer from 000 to 999. The time allowance remains 90 minutes.
The UK competition is scheduled for 7 October 2026. UKMT lists that date as the purchase deadline for downloadable papers; the deadline for posted papers was 16 September. Students should contact their school’s competition teacher now, because a school may set an earlier internal deadline. See the official SMC format and entry information.
What changes in preparation?
For the final three questions, students will need to reach a numerical answer without a list of five alternatives. When practising, try covering the options on an older problem, solve it, and then check the answer. This is a preparation suggestion, not a replacement for UKMT’s instructions.
Keep a short record of errors: a missed condition, an arithmetic slip, or an answer that did not address the question. That record is often more useful than simply adding up a practice score.
Where the SMC fits in the Olympiad pathway
The SMC is a first-round challenge, not the International Mathematical Olympiad itself. According to the British Mathematical Olympiad organisers, students who meet the relevant SMC score and are eligible to represent the UK can qualify automatically for BMO Round 1. Teachers can also enter other students through the applicable entry arrangements.
BMO1 asks for written solutions to six problems over three and a half hours. A strong SMC performance is therefore a reason to begin explaining why an answer is correct, not just calculating it. Our first proof practice plan offers a starting point.
The official BMOS calendar currently lists BMO1 for 18 November 2026 and BMO2 for 20 January 2027. Neither participation nor a qualifying score is a guarantee of an IMO team place.
What to do next
Ask your teacher to confirm your entry and the current answer-sheet instructions. Overseas schools should check their local sitting arrangements with UKMT rather than assume the headline UK date applies everywhere.
